Viking and Archaeology Trip

A report about our trip to Dig and the Jorvik Viking Centre by Izzy and Erin

On Monday the 18th of December Ouse Class went on a really fun school trip to Dig and Jorvik. On the coach on the way there we were all singing Christmas songs like Merry Christmas Everyone and Jingle bells with the CD. We started at Dig with a ‘Battle Tactics’ workshop where we were able to learn about and try on Viking costumes and look at their weapons and learnt about how they planned for battles. Seth was acting and had to pretend to fall over a chicken and die which was really funny. We then had to dig for buried artefacts from different periods of history. We found things from Roman, Anglo-Saxon, Viking and Victorian times before we had our lunch.

We then to the Jorvik Centre where we found out all about the Coppergate dig where archaeologists found lots of Viking artefacts in York. We then went on a ride which took us back in time to Jorvik (York) in Viking times. We saw how the Vikings used to live. Some were playing games, some were trading, some were preparing food, some were making things and there was even somebody sitting on the toilet which was funny. The whole ride was very smelly, like it would have been back then but at least the Vikings were much cleaner and more hygienic than the Anglo-Saxons! We then were shown how the Vikings made coins and we made our own. It was then time to go back to the coach but Mrs Jackson broke the CD player so we could have more Christmas song, so we sang a few of our own. We had an amazing day which was really fun.
